Think of the negative side of being at home.

The grass is always greener on the other side. No matter how much you hated home while you were there, with a little time away you soon forget the bad side and look at it with rose tinted glasses. You need to be realistic; all those reasons you wanted to leave in the first places still exist! So remind yourself why you wanted to leave in the first place.

Step away from social media.

It’s tough when you see pictures of friends or family out at parties or nights out or weekends away, and you weren’t invited because, obviously, you’re thousands of miles apart. Remind yourself that social media is just a snapshot of home life…

We rarely go away during the holidays in December / January as Pete works between Christmas and New Year (the joys of owning your own hospitality business), but I always have a week or so time off work and I choose to spend it on catching up on stuff around the house and hanging out with the kids.

This time is somewhat of a challenge for me though, keeping the kids occupied day and night by myself, and getting them motivated to do and play something other than iPhones, iPads, Netflix or PlayStation – so I try and keep them busy and get them out of the house for some part of the day.

I also like to keep things very simple, after a thumper year of work (literally crawled to the finish line) apart from socialising at Christmas or New Year’s Eve with family and friends, I don’t travel…

I’ve been a bit lost.

It’s the 17th January. That marks 4 months of travelling and the last 3 weeks in Australia and oh my, I’ve been lording it. No more backpacks, cold showers and hostels. I have the most generous family looking after me; belly laughing evenings of delicious food, scrumptious cocktails and wine. I’ve seen some of my closest and long lost friends, my awesome little bro and getting to see their beautiful new worlds.

Everything has genuinely been relaxed, refreshed and happy. But. There’s a little monster on my shoulder and he is telling me that he is a bit lost.

Slipping back into these home comforts with a lighter frame of mind and smile beaming… I unexpectedly and slowly grew kind of anxious. I started to worry about running out of money, about not moving forward with life in relationships or careers, I started to grew really anxious about people…
